Dental Inlays and Onlays in Chilliwack, BC
Sometimes a cavity is too large for a simple filling. In these cases, inlays and onlays provide a durable, long-lasting, and realistic solution that will stop tooth decay in its tracks and protect your tooth from further infection. Fillings and inlays are very similar, as with crowns and onlays, but there are a few key differences that your dentist can discuss with you next time you require a dental restoration.
How Inlays Work
Inlays are placed in spaces where a tooth has decayed beyond the capacity for a simple filling. Inlays are custom-made to fit like a puzzle piece into the exact shape and contour of a cavity, making sure there is no room for food or bacteria to enter the space. Your dentist may suggest an inlay if your cavity is extensive but not yet reaching the cusps of your tooth.
How Onlays Work
Onlays are tailored to fit the exact size and shape of a cavity that has reached the cusp of the teeth. Similar to a dental crown, an onlay covers the entire biting surface of the tooth, except that an onlay does not cover the entire tooth structure. An onlay may be an effective restoration for you to prevent decay from reaching down to the root, as the root canal will likely require a lot of drilling to remove the infection.
